Robert H. Whitney, 96, of North Lamont Circle, Cortland passed away surrounded by his loving family on Saturday, February 4, 2017 in the Cortland Regional Medical Center.

A lifelong area resident, he was born May 3, 1920 in Syracuse, a son of the late William and Nellie Martin Whitney.

Following his graduation from Cortland High School he worked for his dad at his glass shop, The Glassman, before being drafted into the US Army. He served from 1942-1945 with the 1st Battalion 151st Infantry. He served in New Guinea, Leyte and Luzon and received several citations for his service including the American Service Medal, Asian-Pacific Service Medal, the Bronze Arrowhead Medal, Good Conduct Medal and the Philippines Liberation Ribbon.

Bob had been employed over the years at Wickwire Brothers,  Thompson Boats, Cortland High School and retired in 1986 from TC3. His most rewarding job was the 19 years he spent at Brockway Motors. Bob truly loved Brockway trucks and the people he worked with were an extension of his family.

Surviving is his loving companion of 46 years, Ada Carnell of Cortland, their son, Kevin (Carrie) Whitney of Cortland; two daughters, Gail (Rick) Baird of Kill Devil Hills, NC and Kim (Jeff) Seamans of TN; his grandchildren, Reese and Reagan Whitney; Nicole Brasuell,  Chris and Elise Baird and Seth and Shelby Seamans. Also surviving is his brother and sister in law, Steve and Mary Slaght of Ithaca, with whom he enjoyed many Sunday visits

Bob was predeceased by his brother, Kenneth Whitney and a sister, Gladys Whitney.

In keeping with Mr. Whitney's wishes there will be no calling hours or services. Graveside services, with military honors, will be held in Cortland Rural Cemetery in the spring.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions in Mr. Whitney’s name may be directed to the Brockway Truck Preservation Association, PO Box 333, Cortland, NY 13045.
