William F. “Bill” Hurley, 86, formerly of Park Avenue, Homer, passed away following a lengthy illness on Tuesday, November 22, 2016 in the Cortland Regional Nursing Facility where he had been a resident since 2012.
Bill was born and raised in Hornell, the son of the late William and Ida Long Hurley.
He attended the University of Buffalo before enlisting in the US Army, faithfully serving his country during the Korean War.
Bill started his engineering career in Hornell, working for the State of New York. He relocated to Homer and worked for the Cortland County Highway Department on the bridge and road crew, before moving to Arizona in 1979 where he worked for the City of Phoenix, retiring in 1995. Moving back to Homer in 2002.
He was a communicant of St. Margaret's Church in Homer. Bill was also a life member of American Legion, Gilbert, AZ; a member of the Loyal Order of Moose in Tempe, AZ; a member of the DAV in Hornell, the Fraternal Order of Eagles, Cortland and was a life member of Homer Lodge #2506 BPOE.
Surviving is his loving wife of 47 years, Carole L. Grimes Hurley; step-daughter, Patricia (Lynn) Howe of Homer; a step-son, Michael (Nodja) Donahue of Smithville Flats; three grandchildren, Leann (Richard) Brown; Rochelle (Jon) Beyer and Thomas (Ashlee) Donahue as well as nine great-grandchildren.
Family and friends are invited to a celebration of Bill’s life on Thursday, December 1, 2016 at the Homer Elks Lodge, 82 Cortland St., Homer from 1:00 – 4:00 P.M.
Bill will be laid to rest in St. Anne’s Cemetery, Hornell in the spring.
