Ruth Weddle Contento passed away peacefully on January 6, 2017 at home surrounded by family. She was 95 years old.
Ruth was born on July 11, 1921 in Cortland, the daughter of William Weddle and Naida Coon Weddle.
Ruth attended Central City Business Institute in Syracuse and then worked at Brockway Motors in Cortland. She married Leonard Contento on June 29, 1946. Ruth and Leonard were a loving couple and her close relationship with her husband was an inspiration to her family. Together they ran Leonard's Coffee Shop on Main Street in Homer for 19 years where she was famous for her delicious pies. Later, Ruth was a bookkeeper at Cortland Overhead Door until her retirement.
Ruth was active in the Homer Methodist Church and the Homer Order of the Eastern Star.
Ruth is survived by her sister Jane Schuehler of Cortland, children William (Eileen) Contento of Livermore, CA, Cherie (Stephen) Major, and James (Brenda) Contento; grandchildren Matthew Murphy, Nicki Contento, Jaime Murphy, Jason Contento, Elizabeth Murphy, Katie Sibbald, Theresa VanBuskirk, Christina Major, Cory Contento, Laura Major, and eight great-grandchildren.
Ruth was predeceased by her husband, Leonard in 2014 and her brother, Stanley Weddle.
Calling hours will be Thursday, January 12, 2017 from 4:00 – 6:00 p.m. at the Donald L. Barber Funeral Home, Homer.
Funeral services will be held on Friday, January 13, 2017 at 11:30 a.m. in the First United Methodist Church of Homer, 16 Cayuga St., Homer, with Pastor Rachel Morse officiating. A luncheon will follow in the church hall.
