Richard J. Matson, Sr., 89, of Kinney Gulf Rd., Cortland, passed away on January 19, 2024 in University Hospital, Syracuse.
A lifelong area resident, Dick was born May 21, 1934, a son of the late John and Gertrude Burk Matson.
Following his graduation from Virgil High School in 1952, he worked for Noss Radio for several years, before entering the US Army in 1954. Dick served during the Korean War in Germany and was honorably discharged in 1956.
He retired in 1993 from NYSEG, where he was employed for 35 years.
Surviving is his loving wife of 67 years, Mary Ellen Grinnell Matson; his children, Richard J. (Frances) Matson, Jr. of Bolton Landing; Randall E. Matson of Raquette Lake; Gloria E. Matson of Lansing; and Gail E.M. (Eric) Cole of Homer; four grandchildren, Nicholas and Alexander Matson and Madeline and Camdyn Cole. Also surviving are his three sisters, Ann Mohr of Oxford; Lee Jackson of Xenia, OH and Kay Doak of Greene and several nieces, nephews and cousins.
Funeral services will be held at 5:00 p.m. on Friday, January 26, 2024 at the Donald L. Barber Funeral Home, 5016 US Route 11, Homer. Interment in Cortland Rural Cemetery will be delayed until spring along with a celebration of life.
The family will receive relatives and friends at the funeral home on Friday from 3:00 p.m. until the time of the service.
