Matthew Morgan Obituary

Matthew A. Morgan passed away peacefully on February 2, 2023 surrounded by his loving family after an eight-year battle with cancer. He was born on July 10, 1948 in Cortland, New York and loved living in this community his entire life.

Matt’s life was devoted to his family, friends and the many communities he served. He enjoyed a fulfilling and successful career running Morgan Associates for 20 years, his own lobbying firm based in Albany, NY. He went on to serve as Deputy Director of the NYS Fair, Deputy Commissioner of NYS’ Department of Agriculture/Markets, and Regional Administrator of NYS Workers’ Compensation Board.

Matt was committed to the people of this state, serving as a member of the Democratic State Committee for 20 years, the Board of Directors for Morrisville College Council for 30 years, the Foundation Board at Morrisville State College for 29 years, and the Elmcrest Children’s Center for 25 years. He was the president of the Association of Council Members and Trustees and served on the Chancellor’s Advisory Council, Foundation Board at TCCC, numerous boards/counsels at Cornell University and as a trustee at the Brewster House.

Many people knew him as “Captain Matt” from Captain Matt’s restaurant at the NYS Fair, where he felt blessed with his partner and his wife, Gary and Vi Bobbett, whose family was like family to his own throughout the years.

Matt smiled freely, loved often and had a contagious laugh that could lift the spirits of those even in the direst of situations. He loved his life, career, friends and most importantly his family.

He is preceded in death by his parents Ruth (McMahon) Morgan and William H. Morgan II, sister Margaret (Morgan) Perfetti, brother-in-law David Perfetti, brother Michael Morgan and sister-in-law Susie Morgan, father- and mother-in-law Hap and Fanny Griswold, and sister-in-law Sharon Fedele.

Matthew is survived by Linda, his loving wife of 49 years, his four children Marc (Gail), Stephen (Jennifer), Meghan, and Kevin (Lianna) Morgan, his grandchildren Kaylee, Joseph, Connor, Madison, Maeve, Daniel, Jack, Emmaline, Sophia, Meara, Asher, Paxton, Dominick, and Matthew Morgan and Mya Goddard, as well as Zachary, Joshua and William Morgan, his sister Maureen Morgan, his cousin/brother/best friend Steve (Doreen) Morgan, his sisters in law Janet Klein and Judy (Dana) Norman. He is also survived by many loving nieces and nephews and a number of loving relatives and friends.

Matt also considered all his children and grandchildren’s friends as part of our family. He made a lasting impact on more people that we could possibly list. He loved them all as his own.

Matt and his family want to give a special thank you to his many loving nieces and nephews that have helped us get through the last few months. An extra special thank you goes out to Matt’s loving granddaughters Kaylee Morgan and Mya Goddard and his niece and nephew Tim and Lisa Perfetti for their endless, constant care of Matt (and his family) in his final months. Their love, guidance, selflessness and care for Matt is something we will all be eternally grateful for.
