Marjorie “Joy” Niswender was called home to be with her Lor and Savior on Tuesday, July 9, 2024.
Joy was born in Cortland, to Lester and Mabel Davis and lived on Grove Street, Homer. She graduated from Homer High School and attended Powelson Business Institute, Syracuse.
Joy married Kenneth D. Niswender on August 11, 1944. Ken and Joy had three children, Robert, Michael and Teri. Joy lived in Preble and Little York her married life.
Joy worked with her husband as an office manager for Ken’s Repair and Towing Service. She later worked for many years at the Cortland County Council of Churches, retiring in 1998.
Joy was a lifelong member of the Preble Congregational Church. She taught Sunday School and was a member of the church choir. Joy was an avid author and wrote articles for Church News and Views for the local paper. She wrote a motivational column for the church newsletter “Joy In The Morning” which still runs to this day. Music, swimming, camping, reading, computer games and crossword puzzles kept Joy active and happy over the years.
Joy was predeceased by her husband, Kenneth, her parents Mabel and Lester, sister Louise, brother Richard, her son Robert and Granddaughter Kelly Niswender.
She is survived by her son, Michael (Joan) Niswender; daughter, Teri (Scott) Brown; grandchildren, Wendi Niswender, Jeffery (Lindsey) Niswender, Keith (Jill) Brown, and Kylie Brown; great grandchildren, Dorian Jones and Gia Niswender.
The family would like to give special thanks to iCircle Care, Linda Rosato, April Coolidge, Teressa Moore and the Hospice Staff. With this team of people, she was able to be at home until her passing.
Memorial services will be held at 7:00 p.m. on Thursday, July 25, 2024 at the Preble Congregational Church, 1953 Preble Rd., Preble, with Rev. Brenda McCutcheon officiating. To stream Joy’s services, visit her obituary at www.DonaldLBarberFuneralHome.com and select Live Stream.
Calling hours will be held at the church on Thursday from 5:30 p.m. until the time of the service.
