Marilyn G. Mowry, 86, formerly of Scott, passed away October 28, 2020 in Cortland Park Nursing Center, where she had been a resident since 2012.
A lifelong area resident, Marilyn was born July 3, 1934, a daughter of the late Clarence and A. Beth Seacord Homer. She was a 1952 graduate of Cortland High School.
Marilyn was for 34 years at Smith Corona in Cortland, retiring in 1994 as a Quality Control Inspector. While at Smith Corona she served on the activity committee for several years.
She was an avid quilter and enjoyed researching her family’s genealogy.
Marilyn was an active and faithful member of the former Homer Baptist Church since 1963, where she served Deaconess, was a member of the Willing Workers Sunday School and a former Sunday School Teacher.
To say Marilyn was active in civic affairs, particularly in the town of Scott, would be an understatement. She was den mother for Pack #106 in Scott for 20 years, while also serving on the Scouting Committee. She was active in the Cortland County Republican Women’s Club and served as the Republican committeeperson for the Town of Scott for several years. Served as Scott Town Historian for many years, was the former president of the region-7 AMHNYS, was a charter member of the Glen Haven Historical Society and was a former Trustee of the Scott Union Cemetery Association.
Marilyn was the driving force, in the 1970’s, in the establishment of the recreation and swim program for the town of Scott. She provided activities for many children in Scott, from baseball games, picnics, and playground equipment (which she also encouraged the town to purchase). In the 1980’s, she was instrumental in getting a pavilion built at the town park on Glen Haven Road. In 2015, the town of Scott honored Marilyn by naming the pavilion at Fuller Park after her.
Surviving are her four children, Jamie (Michael) Goff of Homer; Kevin (Randie) Mowry of Puyallup, WA; Keith (Cindy) Mowry of DuBois, PA; and Jonathon (Tami) Mowry of Murfreesboro, TN; a brother, Kenneth (Barbara) Homer of Binghamton. Also surviving are her grandchildren, Faye (Wayde) Strauf; Brian (Brandie) Mowry; Ashley (Ion) Arai; Courtney (Mike) Lowie; Mariah French; Brandon Mowry and Mikayla Mowry; several great grandchildren and great-great grandchildren.
She was predeceased by her husband, Lewis A. Mowry in 2000; a grandson, Jason Mowry and her sister, Evelyn Hulbert.
In keeping with Marilyn’s wishes, services will be private and at the convenience of the family. Interment will be in Scott Union Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions in Mrs. Mowry’s name may be directed to the Town of Scott Recreation Program, 6689 State Rt. 41, Homer, NY 13077.
