Kenneth Coleman Obituary

Kenneth H. Coleman, 95, of Cortland, passed away peacefully on December 7, 2022.

Born October 25, 1927 in Southport, NY, Ken was the sixth of 16 children born to the late Charles and Anna Louise Force Coleman.  

Ken was honorably discharged from the US Army, serving from 1946-1949. He received the World War Victory Medal. Ken was honored to have been a recipient of an Honor Flight, where America’s veterans are transported to Washington, D.C. to visit the national memorials dedicated to their service and sacrifice.

His favorite job was at Verns Arco gas station. He was retired from the Carrier Corp. in Syracuse where he had worked for several years and had previously worked at Brockway Motors and Overhead Door.  

Ken greatly enjoyed playing golf with his son-in-law, Darol around the CNY area. He also loved to make his famous peanut butter fudge.

Surviving are two daughters, Brenda (Darol) Sweeney and Nancy (Shawn) McMahon, both of Cortland; seven grandchildren, Kristi, Dustin (Nicole), Devin, Erin (Dan), Caitlin (Kent), Ethan and Mason; three great grandchildren, Jordyn, Tanner, and Morgan and Wheeler; a brother, Henry ‘Butch’ (Mary) Coleman; his sister, Sandra Hess and many nieces, nephews and cousins.

He was predeceased by his wife of 64 years, Rita J. Wooldridge Coleman in 2017; a great grandson, Tatum Sweeney and thirteen brothers and sisters.

Calling hours will be held from 3:00 - 5:00 p.m. on Thursday, December 15, 2022 at the Donald L. Barber Funeral Home, 5016 Route 11, Homer.  

Due to the pending inclement weather. Funeral services, with military honors, will be held delayed until spring. 

Memorial contributions in Mr. Coleman’s name may be directed to Cortland County Office of the Aging Meals on Wheels, 60 Central Ave., Cortland, NY 13045 or to the Honor Flight of Syracuse, PO Box 591, Syracuse, NY 13209.

Mr. Coleman’s family would like to thank Sharon Holl, Frank Van Sluis and Jacob Ruebush for the many hours of care and loving attention they gave Ken.
