John G. Helms

John G. Helms, 76, formerly of 42 Church St., Cortland, passed away following lengthy illness on October 9, 2022 in the Groton Nursing Facility.

John was born August 29, 1946, a son of the late Jack and Mary “Betty” McAuliff Helms. Following his graduation from Homer High School, he served in the National Guard.

For many years, he worked as a custodian at Patino Murphy’s and the Red Jug Pub.

He is survived by his son, John (Sarah) Helms of Pompey; two grandchildren, Kara (Parker) Whatley and Hunter Helms; four sisters, Sharon Gay, Rosemary (Stephen) Malchak; Kristen (Charles) Wilson and Mary Jo Helms; several nieces, nephews and several dear friends, Jerry Malchak, Lucille Sopp and Angela Griffin.

John was predeceased by his daughter, Sara J. Helms in 2021; sister, Kelley Williams, brothers, Patrick Helms, J. Michael (Shirley) Helms, Mark (Donna) Helms; brother-in-law, Walter Gay and his nephew, Patrick Gay.

Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, October 14, 2022 at St. Margaret’s Catholic Church, 14 Copeland Ave., Homer, where a Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated by the Rev. Joseph Zareski. Interment will follow in Glenwood Cemetery, Homer.

The family will receive friends and relatives at the church on Friday from 10:00 a.m. until the time of funeral.

Memorial contributions in John’s name may be directed to St. Margaret’s Church or to the charity of one’s choice.
