Janice Jean Duff Valcourt

Janice Gene was born on October 3, 1948, in Cortland, NY.  She passed away peacefully at Guthrie Hospital in Cortland, NY, on January 7, 2025, due to complications from COPD.

Janice was born to Harold Leonard and Betty Carmen. As an only child, Janice gained a confident and affable demeanor, making friends easily wherever she went. One of her favorite things to do was spend time with her beloved maternal grandmother, Gladys Carmen. They shared a tremendous bond living within close proximity of each other right up to Gladys’ passing.

Janice had a great sense of humor, was quick-witted, and wry. She enjoyed a good laugh, which she did with an impish twinkle in her eye. She really had a delight for playing cards, Solitaire and Rummy were her favorites. She spent endless hours with her grandmother, mother, and/or children embroiled in matches, but oftentimes she was just as happy to play on her own.   Janice also had a passion for country music and Karaoke. She sang beautifully and was never shy about breaking out her spoons, which she faithfully always kept in her purse, to play along to the beat.

Throughout her life Janice worked as a care provider in various nursing homes.  Her genuine empathetic personality and impeccable organizational skills made her a perfect fit. That combined with her reliability and willingness to work long hours always made her a valued employee.

In her later years Janice and her mother Betty resided together in Florida. They thoroughly enjoyed having each other’s companionship. They looked after one another and would ‘sit and reminisce’ all the time. She referred to her mother as “My Rock,” and took care of her until her passing upon which she returned to Cortland.

Her finals years she surrounded herself with her children and many grandchildren. She happily joined in activities with them until her health deteriorated, And it was, at last, her turn to be taken care of.

Janice was predeceased by both her mother and father and her ever-loving grandmother, Gladys.

Surviving her are her children, Todd Scheer (age 52), Stacy Scheer (age 50), James Duff (age 46), Timothy Duff (age 45), and Danielle Stevens (age 42). Surviving also are her grandchildren: Anna (age 28), Katelyn (age 23), Haley (age 21), Christopher (age 19), Samara (age 18), Zaiden (age 15), Ethan (age 13), and Loki (age 7)

There will be no funeral services at this time. In lieu of flowers, please make donations to your local Nursing Home Facilities.
