Jack E. Thornton, 72, of Brake Hill Rd., Homer, passed away on Tuesday, February 18, 2020 in the Guthrie Cortland Medical Center following a brief illness.
A lifelong area resident, he was born May 27, 1947, a son of the late Kenneth A. and Vivian Soule Thornton.
Jack retired as deputy superintendent of the Cortlandville Town Water and Sewer Department in 2017, after 20 years of dedicated service. He continued on a part-time basis following his retirement with Town of Cortlandville Highway Department. He had previously worked for a number of years as a mechanic and also as a plumber and electrician for Lynn Hughston.
Jack was an avid outdoorsman, he enjoyed camping, hunting and fishing. He also enjoyed bowling and golf.
He was a longtime member of the Homer Elks Lodge #2506, the Seven Valley Snow Goer Snowmobile Club and the Walden Oaks Country Club
Surviving is his loving wife, Louise Thomas Thornton; two daughters, Theresa L. (Michael) McCauslin, Sr. and Heather M. (Chad) Hill, both of Homer; four grandchildren, Brandon and Michael McCauslin, Jr. and Lorelei and Maggie Hill as well as eight great grandchildren. Also surviving are his siblings, Dan (Rachel) Thornton of Marathon; Brenda (Mark) Ketcham of East Homer; Shirley Dietrich of DeRuyter and Patricia Parker of Cortland as well as several nieces, nephews and cousins.
In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by a brother, Kenneth Thornton, Jr.
Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Monday, February 24, 2020 at the Donald L. Barber Funeral Home, 5016 US Route 11, Homer, with Rev. Vicki Burtson officiating. Interment in Atwater Cemetery, Homer will be delayed until spring.
Calling hours will be held on Sunday from 2:00 – 5:00 p.m. at the funeral home.
