J. Robert "Bob" Messinger

J. Robert "Bob" Messinger, 85, of Abdallah Ave., Cortland, passed away following an extended illness on June 10, 2024.

He was born January 23, 1939 in Oneida, a son of the late Milton and Catherine McDonald Messinger. 

Bob was a proud alum of the University of Notre Dame, graduating in 1965. He enlisted in the U.S. Army in 1961 and was honorably discharged in 1964. 

Bob was an avid golfer and sports fan. He enjoyed watching the NY Yankees, Buffalo Bills and everything Notre Dame. 

He was an active and faithful communicant of St. Margaret’s Church in Homer. He volunteered countless hours to the Disabled American Veterans (DAV) in Cortland. 

Bob had held several positions through the years, including the recycling coordinator for Cortland County and retired after working for both congressmen Mike Arcuri and Maurice Hinchey.

Surviving are his children, Robert Messinger of Cortland and Maureen Iglewski of South Glens Falls; two grandchildren, Zack and Kinsie Iglewski; a great-granddaughter, Ariella Anthony; siblings, James (Maryanne) Messinger of Bridgeport, Cathy (John) Russell of Bedford, PA; his sister-in-law, Sandra Messinger of Belleville, IL and several nieces and nephews. 

Bob was predeceased by his wife of 52 years, Janet H. Messinger in 2020 and a brother, William Messinger. 

Funeral services will be held at 1:30 p.m. on Tuesday, June 18, 2024 in St. Margaret’s Church, 14 Copeland Ave., Homer, where a Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated by Bob’s lifelong friend, Rev. Michael Carmola. Interment in St. Patrick’s Cemetery, Oneida, will be at the convenience of the family.
