Gary A. Dexter, 75, of Cortland, passed away following a lengthy illness on Saturday, July 13, 2019.
Born May 22, 1944 in Honesdale, PA, the oldest child of Albert and Ella DeGroat Dexter.
Gary was honorably discharged from the US Marine Corp in 1967, with the rank of Sergeant, after serving his country in the Vietnam War.
He was formerly employed at Smith Corona and retired from TST BOCES following more than 20 years of service.
Gary enjoyed working with children, whether helping the impaired students at BOCES or coaching youth baseball and football when his boys were young. He was an avid hunter and loved playing basketball and golf.
Surviving are his three sons, Dana G. (Lisa) Dexter of Groton; Derrick G. Dexter of and Dustin G. Dexter, both of Homer; grandchildren, Joshua, Shanna, Stephanie, Breeanna and Wyatt Dexter; a great grandson, Mason Lavigne; six brothers, several nieces, nephews, cousins and many friends.
In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by his wife Patricia A. Biggs Dexter in 2012.
Graveside services, with Marine Corp honors, will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Friday, July 19, 2019 at Elmwood Cemetery, Route 281, Preble.
Calling hours will be held on Thursday from 5:00 – 7:00 p.m. at the Donald L. Barber Funeral Home, 5016 US Route 11, Homer.
