Frederick W. Lenhard, a beloved family man, United States Marine Corps Veteran and NY State Trooper, died peacefully in his home on January 14, 2025 at the age of 81 from complications of Parkinson’s Disease.
Born in Buffalo, NY on August 10, 1943, as one of four boys, he is remembered as a loving and kind brother.
He met his beloved wife Linda before serving in Vietnam. They wrote back-n-forth to each other every day while away in the service and married when he returned home…for 57 years! They grew a loving family together in the close-nit and supportive community of Homer, NY, which Fred was proud to be a part of and out of which many lifetime friendships were built. He especially enjoyed being a member of the Homer Elks lodge, St. Margaret’s church, and local tennis programs, including Homer High School and SUNY Cortland where he made indelible contributions. He had a particular skill for easy conversation after mass, over a cup of coffee or bottle of Yuengling, or in between rallies on the tennis court. He was endearing to all.
As a state trooper, he earned the rank of Sergeant. Following this he spent several years renting and rehabilitating apartments in Cortland. He did all the carpentry and maintenance himself and looked after tenants like family. Later in life, he became a union electrician for IBEW Local 43 until he retired. Fred was a skilled woodworker and craftsman who was always up for a “30 minute job” and often had an assistant or two by his side to teach a new skill to or to share a good laugh with. His witty sense of humor made sure of that.
Growing up in a family of boys, it’s not surprising that Fred had an affinity for sports. Baseball was one of his favorite pastimes and evolved over his lifetime from playing, to watching and organizing “ball games” with his grandkids in his backyard. Tennis, however, was the sport he loved most. He shared many wonderful memories on and off the court as a competitor, spectator and coach.
Fred was a champion in so many aspects of life but perhaps his most esteemed accomplishment was that of “Poppa” to his 5 grandkids whom he adored. His family was his world and his devotion to them was unconditional.
Fred is predeceased by his parents Gerald Lenhard and Margaret (Weidmann) Lenhard, and his son Stephen Lenhard.
He is survived by his wife Linda, his daughters Diana Payne and Rebecca Swan (husband Rob), and three brothers Charles Lenhard, Richard Lenhard, and Kenneth Lenhard (wife Shelly). His grandchildren, Kiana (husband Brady), Jovanni, Nadia, Michael, and Leo also live on with his memories and loving legacy.
A private ceremony will be held to celebrate his life in the Spring. In remembrance of Fred’s generous heart, the family requests that any memorial contributions be made to organizations such as the Parkinson’s Foundation, Smile Train, and the Homer Elks.
