Donel L. Sweeney

Donel L. Sweeney, 86, of Groton, passed away on November 11, 2023 in the Guthrie Cortland Medical Center, following a brief illness.

He was born February 23, 1937 in Cortland, a son of the late Lawrence and Norma Atkins Sweeney.

Donel was a dairy farmer for most of his life. After retiring from farming, he did field work for other farms, drove bus at Greek Peak and Homer Central School, worked for Reed’s Seeds and NAPA Auto before retiring to South Carolina.

Donel was a life-member of the Homer Elks Lodge #2506, where he enjoyed playing pitch with his partner, Dick Warner for many years. 

Surviving is his loving wife of 67 years, Joan Farr Sweeney; his four children, Daniel (Margaret) Sweeney; Darol (Brenda) Sweeney; Dennis (Pamela) Sweeney and Deborah Sweeney; eleven grandchildren, ten great-grandchildren and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

He was predeceased by his sister, Thelma Morse.

The family will receive relatives and friends on Saturday, November 18, 2023 from 2:00 – 4:00 p.m. at Grace Christian Fellowship, 1250 Fisher Ave., Cortland. Interment in St. Mary’s Cemetery will be private and at the convenience of the family.
