Derrick J. Purves

Derrick J. Purves, 43, of Cortland, NY passed away in the comfort of his home, due to a spinal cord injury he suffered 11 years ago, on January 19, 2020.

Derrick was born August 12, 1976 in Potsdam, a son of Wallace E. ‘Wally’ and Mary Jane Murray Purves.

He attended Norwood-Norfolk Central School and graduated from New Hampton School, New Hampton, NH. Derrick was also a graduate of SUNY Cortland.

He had been employed as a recreation therapist at Loretto, Syracuse.

Derrick was avid sport fan, excelling at both soccer and a hockey goalie.

Surviving is his loving daughter, Courtney L. Purves of Cortland; his mother, Mary Jane Purves of Norwood; a sister, Donna J. Purves; step-brother, Robert Purves of Florida; his grandmother, Leila Murray of Norwood and several aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews and cousins.

He was predeceased by his father, Wallace E. ‘Wally’ Purves in 2002.

In keeping with Derrick’s wishes, there will be no calling hours. Memorial services will be held at a later date.

Memorial contributions in Mr. Purves’ name may be directed to the charity of one’s choice.
