Jean T. Caughey, 84, of Albany St., Homer, passed away on Friday, October 12, 2018 following a lengthy illness.
A lifelong area resident, Jean was born January 4, 1934, the eldest daughter of the late D. Walter and Minnie Sergeant Thompson.
Jean retired after 20 years of service with Cortland County as a Stenographic Secretary.
She was a longtime and faithful communicant of St. Margaret’s Church, Homer.
Jean’s greatest accomplishment was being a loving wife, mother and grandmother to her large family, she looked forward to Caughey Breakfast every Sunday. Her passions included daily Bible study, visits with her family, clipping articles out of the Cortland Standard, and volunteering extensively. She appreciated nature, especially bird watching and gardening.
She is survived by her seven children, Michael D. (Kathleen) Caughey of Preble; Kevin J. (Lisa) Caughey of Cobleskill; Teresa J. (Duane) Little of Cortland; Joseph W. (Lisa) Caughey of Broadalbin; David W. (Jacqueline) Caughey of LaFayette; Daniel J. (Deborah) Caughey of Cortland and Kristen C. (Brian) Wakula of Homer; sixteen grandchildren, Kyna Malchak, Shala Wykstra, Tanner Caughey, Corey Caughey, Sarah Caughey, Karli Little, Nicholas Little, Henry Caughey, Edison Caughey, Mattie Caughey, Jack Caughey, Grace Caughey, Alexis Caughey, Connor Caughey and Alyssa and Blair Wakula; six great grandchildren, Wyatt and Tayvn Malchak, Chase and Paxton Caughey and Quinlan and Brae Maura Wykstra. Also surviving is a sister, Nancy Thompson of Rochester and a brother, Robert Thompson of Tully.
She was predeceased by her husband, David L. Caughey; a daughter, Nanette M. Caughey and her sister, Esther Durkee.
Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. on Thursday, October 18, 2018 at St. Margaret’s Roman Catholic Church, 14 Copeland Ave., Homer, where a Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated by the Rev. Paul Alciati. Interment will follow in St. Mary’s Cemetery, Cortland.
Calling hours will be held on Wednesday, October 17, 2018 from 6:00 – 8:00 PM at the Donald L. Barber Funeral Home, 5016 US Route 11, Homer.
