Donald S. Collier, 88, of Bedford St., Homer, passed away on December 10, 2019 in University Hospital, Syracuse, surrounded by his loving family.
A lifelong area resident, Don was born August 23, 1931, a son of the late Kenneth and Nina Hollenbeck Collier.
Don was honorably discharged from the US Army in 1962, following 11 years of faithful service.
He was employed for 38 years at Smith Corona, retiring in 1993.
Don was active in many civic and veterans’ organizations. He was a Life Member of the Homer Lodge #2506 BPOE, where he enjoyed and participated in the Fraternal Pitch League for many years. He was a member of the Cortland DAV, the Marine Corp League, serving many years on the Funeral Honor Guard Team. Don was also a Hall of Fame honoree of the Cortland Bowling Association, participated in the Senior Golf League and was a member of the Song Lake Property Owners Association.
He was a longtime and active member of the Burns-McCauliffe Post 465 American Legion of Homer. He was the chairman of the 6th District American Legion Family Golf Tournament and was currently serving as an aide to the New York State American Legion Commander, Mike McDermott.
Don is survived by two daughters, Diana Moreland of Homer; Nancy Gouchie of Tully; four granddaughters, Kristin Moreland; Melissa (Miguel) Campos; Corrine (Philip) Mitsiell and Heather Duff; six great grandchildren; Jordan, Jonah, Nina, Jadin, Jackson and Olivia; a brother, Robert (Nancy) Collier of Boone, NC; his beloved cat, Shadow and several nieces, nephews, cousins and many dear friends.
In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by his wife, Jeanine Hess Collier in 2014; a sister, Patricia Woodward and his son-in-law, James Gouchie.
Memorial services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Monday at the Donald L. Barber Funeral Home, 5016 US Route 11, Homer. Interment, with Military Honors, will follow in Glenwood Cemetery, Homer.
There will be a celebration of life for family and friends at the Homer American Legion, 63 S. Main St., Homer immediately following the services at Glenwood Cemetery.
Calling hours will be held at the funeral home on Sunday from 4:00 – 7:00 p.m.
