Steven Schoonover Obituary

Steven E. Schoonover Sr., of Fair Haven Rd., Homer, passed away on February 22, 2024 while under the care of his loving family at the age of 74.

Steve was born October 22, 1949 in East Stroudsburg, PA, a son of the late John and Eleanor Lewis Schoonover.

He graduated from Homer High School in 1968, where he was an outstanding athlete with his teammates giving him the nickname “Bullett”. Steve held several Homer football records. For over 30 years he held the record for either the longest kick off or punt returned for a touchdown. He currently ranks 43rd in all-time career points with 72 and 27th in total rushing yards with 1,030.

In 1968, he broke the school’s track record for the long jump, but it wasn’t acknowledged because he did not win the meet.

Steve retired after more than 30 years of employment from Suit-Kote and had also worked for many years at Economy Paving.

Many who knew Steve where aware of his innateness for trapping. He was continually receiving praises and plaudits for being a “Top Lot” trapper and producing some of the highest quality fur in North America.

Surviving is his wife of 48 years, Patricia A. Hudson Schoonover; his children, Steven E. Schoonover, Jr. and Sarah A. (Robert “Bubba”) Cobb, both of Homer; his grandchildren, Seamus (Mackenzie), Paddraic (Iris), Tasie (Mason), Aislynn and Savannah; two great grandchildren, Clayton and Mason, plus one; brother, John Schoonover, Jr. of East Stroudsburg, PA; his sister, Susan Sepkowski of Rochester; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

In addition to his parents, Steve was predeceased by his sister-in-law, Shirley Schoonover and brother-in-law, Edward Sepkowski.
