Ron was born in Truxton NY to Carl Potter and Helen Case on June 18, 1938. He spent most of his life in Preble NY. He was predeceased by his parents, Carl and Helen Potter, his sisters, Jane (Henry) Fagan of Florida, Katie (Francis) Mead of Sempronius, Sharron, Colleen and his brother Ralph.
He is survived by his wife, Doris Potter of Preble; his daughter, Debbie Erickson of the state of Washington; step-sons, Doug (Dena) Heath of Newfield; Brian Townsend of Preble; Joey (Lisa) Townsend of Auburn; Dennis Townsend of North Carolina; Kevin Townsend of North Carolina; and Jerry Townsend of Auburn; his sisters, Mary (Edward) Wilcox of Homer and Rose (Kenneth) Wells of Truxton; his granddaughter, Erin Townsend of Tully and many, many grandchildren and great grandchildren.
The family would like to extend a heartfelt thank you to Ron’s caregiver Courtney Allen and family at this time. Ron cared for her and her children as if they were family and always enjoyed the time he was able to spend with them all. We thank you from the bottom of our hearts for all you have done for him in his time of need.
Ron was an avid antique tractor lover and always participated in parades, shows and anything he could involving his tractor. Being on a tractor or talking about his tractors was his happy place. He also enjoyed repairing clocks and spending time with his horses. Unfortunately, due to a long battle with illness, he was not able to enjoy these small things during his later years, but enjoyed looking at old photos, telling stories, cracking jokes, and watching videos about the things that he loved. In the last few months of his life, Ron was able to find joy in spending time with his granddaughter Erin and his great grandchildren, Jaxon, Sophia, Wyatt, and Cooper. He also enjoyed spending time with the dogs and feeding them treats when no one was looking. One of his greatest joys in life was sitting with a dog on his lap while watching old videos of horse pulls on TV. Although it was not enough time together, the time he had with his granddaughter and great grandchildren was very special to him.
Ron will be laid to rest in the Truxton Cemetery with his family at a later date. The family has decided to hold a private graveside service. Memorial contributions can be made to the Cortland County SPCA in lieu of flowers.
