Robert Gene Burns

Robert Gene “Bobby” Burns, passed away unexpectedly March 12, 2023 at his home.

He was born January 4, 1957 in Cortland and was the son of the late Lloyd and Irene Burns of Spafford.

Bobby graduated in 1976 from Skaneateles High School and worked for many years at farms in Scott, Spafford, and Borodino. He worked at the Cortland County Highway Department for 30 years, retiring in 2012.

He was a volunteer fireman for the Spafford Fire Department for 40+ years and held various positions. In his leisure time he enjoyed hunting, fishing, and spending time with family and friends. He also enjoyed old cars and watching his nephews race at Skyline. He was also a fantastic carpenter and mechanic and could build and fix just about anything.

He is survived by his daughter, Amy of North Carolina; a sister, Elaine Lyon of Cortland, and a brother, Bruce “Tiny” (Marie) Burns of Cincinnatus; and many nieces, nephews and cousins.

He was predeceased by his parents; a son, Jeremy; three sisters, Joyce, Sherry, and Phyllis; two brothers, Jimmy and Dale; as well as several aunts, uncles, and cousins.

There will be no formal services at his request. A celebration of life will be held from 2:00-5:00 PM on Saturday, April 8, 2023 at the Spafford Fire Department, 660 State Route 41.
