Raymond "Ray" Niehus

Raymond “Ray” Niehus, 80, of Brentwood Dr., Homer passed away following a lengthy illness in the early hours of August 12, 2021 to join his beloved wife, Cathy.

Ray was born November 22, 1940 in Alden, NY, a son of the late Harry J. and Naomi Heidenreich Niehus.

Ray had many interests and pursuits throughout his life. He enjoyed bowling. He tried golf but it didn't really take and he would never admit it but he was a lover of animals, with numerous family pets.

He was a longtime and active member of the Cortland Jaycee’s. He loved dressing as Santa in front of Chappell’s (for those that can remember that far back). His involvement in the Jaycee’s introduced him to his love of travel. Trips to the national convention turned into extended family vacations, including a marathon five-week journey that took the family to Yellowstone, the Grand Canyon, Bryce Canyon, Zion National Park and Mount Rushmore. He enjoyed many more with his beloved wife, Cathy

Retired from SUNY Cortland as a purchasing agent after 30+ years of service.

Surviving are two sons, Michael Niehus of Homer and Mark (Kristie) Niehus of Wadsworth, OH; and a grandson, Andrew Niehus. He will also be missed by many brother and sisters-in-law and many nieces and nephews.

Ray was predeceased by his wife, Catherine B. Niehus in 2018; and two brothers, Kenneth and Donald Niehus.

Funeral services will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Saturday, September 4, 2021 at the Donald L. Barber Funeral Home, 5016 US Route 11, Homer. The family will receive friends and family from 11:00 a.m. until the time of the service. Interment in St. Mary’s Cemetery will be at the convenience of the family.
