Linda Sweeney Obituary

On February 27, 2024 Linda Sharon Sweeney saddled up for her horse trail rides in heaven.

Linda Sharon Minard Sweeney was born on December 31, 1948, a daughter of the late Donald and Linda Minard of Angola, NY.

Linda was given a horse at four and a pony at five years old. She and her family raised and showed registered boxer dogs for many years. She loved animals, especially horses, all her life.

Linda graduated from Eden High School in Eden, NY. She came to Cortland as a student and later became an equine instructor at 5-H acres equine school of riding om Kinney Gulf Road in Cortland. She drove school bus for Homer Central School, and waitressed part time for John and Pearl Stevens’ Mineral Springs Restaurant in Groton, NY.

She received her LPN and Registered Nurse degrees from Tompkins Cortland Community College in Dryden, NY. She received her bachelor’s in nursing from Utica Rome College.

She was a resident attendant at Riverview Home for Adults, Cortland County Farm on Lorings Crossings in Cortland. Linda was the director of the Elizabeth Brewster House in Homer, she transferred to the long-term home health program at Cortland Memorial Hospital for many loving years.

Linda and her husband established Irish Spring Equine Farm in Summer Hill. For many years they boarded horses and held centered riding clinics.

Linda is survived by her husband, Shaun P. Sweeney; brother, Dennis (Joann) Minard; niece, Elizabeth and nephew, Ryan; all of Buffalo. She also leaves ten loving sisters and brothers-in-law from her husband’s family; many horse friends, kind neighbors and business friends.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11:00 a.m. on Wednesday, March 6, 2024 in St. Mary’s Church, Cortland.

Calling hours will be held from 6:00 – 8:00 p.m. on Tuesday at the Donald L. Barber Funeral Home, 5016 US Route 11, Homer.

Any donations could be made to the Cortland JR Fair, SPCA, TC3 Emergency Nursing Program, any 4-H Clubs, Cortland Repertory Theatre, Dwyer Memorial Park, a local food pantry or the Elizabeth Brewster House.
