Douglas J. Robbins, 78, of Maxfield Rd., Cortland, passed away unexpectedly, surrounded by his loving family and friends, on January 22, 2020.
A lifelong area resident, Doug was born March 4, 1941, a son of the late Robert and Norma Reynolds Robbins. He was a graduate of Homer Central School and attended Morrisville College. Doug was raised on the family farm and continued farming until 1985. In addition to farming, he had a 39-year career as a bus driver for the Homer Central School.
After his retirement, Doug enjoyed an active life. He often enjoyed taking his grandchildren out for car rides or to dinner. When he was not spending time with his grandchildren, he was enjoying the company of his lifelong friend Thomas Place Senior. There was nothing Doug loved more than spending time with the friends and family he loved. Doug enjoyed spending much of his time outdoors and working with his hands. He loved working in his wood working shop, mowing the lawn, and being in the woods. He also enjoyed relaxing by the pool and soaking in the sun. He was proud of the T-Bucket car he built, along with his sons. He even had the car signed by Michael Waltrip. When he was able, he enjoyed traveling to Watkins Glen and the Pocono Raceway for NASCAR events. He also enjoyed watching WWE.
Surviving are his four children, Kevin (Billi Jo) Robbins; Christopher Robbins (Carol Armstrong); Monica Robbins (Chris Stoll) and Kimberly (Michael) Lane; his former wife, Cecile Heller Robbins; his grandchildren: Christi, Mike, Robert, Madison, Byron, Savannah, Tiffany, Dakota, Samantha, Shyanne, Sebastian, Skylar, Jessica, Katelynn, and Michael. Also surviving are four great grandchildren Hayleigh, Vanessa, David, and Dakota as well as an aunt and several nieces, nephews and cousins.
In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by his brother Kermit Robbins and his children Christi and Thomas Robbins.
The family will receive relatives and friends on Thursday from 4:00 – 6:00 p.m. at the Donald L. Barber Funeral Home, 5016 US Route 11, Homer. Interment in Atwater Cemetery, Homer, will be delayed until spring.
There will be a celebration of life for family and friends at the Homer American Legion, 63 S. Main St., Homer immediately following the calling hours.
