Dorothy E. Smith, formerly of 58 Cortland St., Homer, passed away peacefully on Monday, September 9, 2019 at Cortland Park Nursing Center at the age of 101.
A lifelong area resident, Dorothy was born August 11, 1918, a daughter of the late Leon and Josephine Daley Woodward.
Dorothy faithfully served her country in the US Marine Corp during World War II, where she was discharged with the rank of Sergeant.
She retired in 1982 from the Cortland County Highway Department, where she worked for 23 years as an Account Clerk.
Dorothy was a longtime and faithful communicant of St. Margaret’s Church, Homer. She was the former Chair of the Church Decorating Committee, Human Development Committee and Funeral Reception Committee. As an avid gardener, she enjoyed tending to the flowers, both inside and outside of the church and had volunteered at Cortland Park where she would pray the Rosary.
Surviving is her daughter, Patricia (Thomas) Barnes of Homer; a sister, Thelma Elwood of Homer; two grandchildren, Tammy (Matt) Small and Matthew (Jelena) Barnes; seven grandchildren, Olivia, Alexis, Ian, Isabelle and Aidan Small, and Tommy and Mackenzie Barnes as well as many nieces and nephews.
Dorothy was predeceased by her husband, Edward “Cy” Smith in 1990; two sons, John and Michael Smith and her siblings, Gerald, Donald, Lloyd, Jeremiah, Kenneth, Leon, Lester and Emma Woodward and Janet James.
Funeral services will be held Friday at 11:00 a.m. at St. Margaret’s Church, 14 Copeland Ave., Homer, where a Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated by the Rev. Paul Alciati. Interment, with Marine Corp Honors, will follow in Glenwood Cemetery, Homer.
The family will receive friends and relatives on Friday from 12:30 – 2:00 p.m. in the basement of St. Margaret’s Church.
