Cher ‘Bear’ Riter, 62, of Carroway Hill Rd., Homer, passed away on February 24, 2010 in University Hospital, Syracuse.
A lifelong area resident, Cher was born March 31, 1947 in Cortland, the only child of the late John C. and Genevieve Holl Hamilton. She was a graduate of Cortland High and SUNY Morrisville School of Nursing.
She was employed for 40 years at the Cortland Regional Medical Center, as an LPN for 27 years and a Central Service Technician for the past 13 years. Also, for the past 7 years, Cher was the secretary for Reagan-Riter Boiler Works, Inc.
She was a very active and faithful member, of more than 40 years, of the Burns-McCauliffe Post #465 American Legion Auxiliary of Homer.
Cher also embraced the Native American heritage; she lived a large part of life following their culture, music and symbols.
Surviving is her husband of 41 years, Francis O. Riter, sister-in-law, Mary Riter of Syracuse; niece, Stacey Waterman (John Kapusniak) of Nedrow; great nephew, Mark Kapusniak and three cousins, Robert (Sharon) Hamilton of Cortland; Charles (Sandy) Carter of Cortland and John (Cathy) Dempsey of Cortland. Also surviving are nieces and nephews of the Riter family, Suzanne, Sally, Jerry and Sandy.
Funeral services will be held at 3 p.m. on Sunday at the Donald L. Barber Funeral Home, 5016 N. Main St., Homer, with the Rev. Allan J. Ferguson officiating. Interment in Glenwood Cemetery, Homer, will be delayed until spring.
Calling hours will be held at the funeral home on Sunday from 1 p.m. until the time of the service.
