Stephen H. Knapp

Stephen H. Knapp died unexpectedly at his home in Homer, NY, on November 30, 2017 at the age of 65.

Born October 3, 1952, he grew up on a thriving farm in Preble, NY, with his seven siblings. After college, he spent three decades in Wisconsin before returning to New York in 2013. In those decades, he raised two daughters and spent many years farming. He eventually moved from milk production to processing at a dairy processing plant, where he worked until 2011 with a group of coworkers he enjoyed greatly.

Steve enjoyed music, from The Allman Brothers to BB King to Bjork, and especially going to concerts of all kinds. He loved and respected the accomplishments of his two daughters, and above all else adored his grandchildren. He was an avid motorcyclist before an accident left him unable to ride. Though taciturn and reserved, he was a welcoming host--be it inviting his daughters’ friends to stay in his home or taking a Spanish class at a local community college to better communicate with new immigrant coworkers. Steve was an endless tinkerer, on woodworking projects, bicycles, small motors, puzzles. He loved trying new foods, driving scenic routes along the Mississippi River or the Pacific coast, spending time with his loved ones and animals, particularly dogs. He embodied a patience and quiet strength that will be sorely missed by all who knew him.

Steve is survived by his two daughters, Alison (Brent) Sadowy of Rochester, MN; and Christine Knapp of Los Angeles, CA; his two grandchildren, Milla Sadowy and Alec Sadowy; his seven siblings, Barbara (Richard) Kenney of Cuyler; James Knapp of Preble; Janie Hughes of Homer; Peter (Patty) Knapp; Philip (Mary) Knapp; Paul (Maureen) Knapp and John Knapp, all of Preble. Also surviving is his aunt, Eivor Sellen, and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Del and June Sellen Knapp.

Calling hours will be held on Friday from 1:00-2:00 p.m. at the Donald L. Barber Funeral Home, 5016 Route 11, Homer. The family will also receive friends at the Homer Community Building, Main St., Homer from 2:00-4:00 p.m. where a light luncheon will be served. Interment will be in Elmwood Cemetery, Preble.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be directed to the Cortland SPCA, 879 McLean Rd., Cortland, NY 13045, the Preble Congregational Church, 1953 Preble Rd., Preble, NY 13141 or the Cortland County Family YMCA, 22 Tompkins St., Cortland, NY 13045.
