Sarah Shirley Biase

Sarah Shirley Biase, 91, of 73 North Main St., Homer, passed away while under the care of Hospice and her loving family on Monday, March 5, 2018. She was a long-time resident of Homer.

Shirley was born April 21, 1926 in Boston, MA, a daughter of the late Albert and Susan Langwith McDonald. Being born in the depression, she learned to make the best of what you have and because of it or in spite of it always saw the best in everyone and everything.

She was employed as an account clerk for 17 years with the Cortland County Department of Social Services, retiring in 1988. And all the while she also raised three children, she was a loving wife to G. Robert Biase for 52 years and together did much traveling overseas and across the country, as well as bowling and golfing together.

She was a communicant of Saint Margaret’s. Shirley was a long-time volunteer at Cortland Regional Medical center as well as a Red Cross Volunteer for 30+ years. She could often be found swimming at the YWCA where she was a member for more than 60 years. Summers were spent digging in her garden, roller skating with her girlfriends, or camping with her family.

Shirley enjoyed her friends and neighbors in Homer and lived her life to the fullest. She was often seen cruising down Main Street on her scooter, on her way to Mass or the Village Green to watch a concert.  Never letting a moment to enjoy life pass her by.

Surviving are two daughters, Kathleen A. Biase of Gardnerville, NV and Barbara A. Biase of Homer; daughter-in-law, Paula Biase of Clifton Springs; her brother, John A. (Katherine) McDonald of West Newbury, MA; three grandchildren, Avery Norman, Holly Biase and Ashley Biase; one great grandson, Adrian Biase and several nieces, nephews.

She was predeceased by her husband, G. Robert Biase in 1998, her son, Thomas A. Biase in 2016 and a grandson, Adrian Norman in 2006.  

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, March 17, 2018 at St. Margaret’s Roman Catholic Church, 14 Copeland Ave. Homer, where a Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated by the Rev. Paul Alciati. Interment in Scott Union Cemetery will be at the convenience of the family.

Calling hours will be held on Friday, March 16, 2018 from 4:00 – 6:00 p.m. at the Donald L. Barber Funeral Home, 5016 US Route 11, Homer.
