Gladys Dougan Obituary

Gladys “Glady” Faye Dougan (Munson) passed away peacefully March 16, 2018, at home after a long courageous battle with COPD.

Glady was born July 7, 1949 to David and Mary (Caughey) Munson.  She was the oldest of five children and grew up helping to watch her other siblings and helping around the poultry farm/poultry business (Munsons’ Poultry) owned originally by her grandparents and later operated by her father and aunt.

She attended Homer High School where she most enjoyed the art program and learned an intense love of creating things.  After graduating in 1967, she attended Potsdam State University where she was enrolled in the art program with her favorite subject being pottery. As a precursor to her first semester at Potsdam State she attended the summer program at Star Lake, where she made many beautiful pieces of pottery with the intention of making it a career, but soon learned she could give her creations away to friends and family but just could not sell them. While at Star Lake she met the love of her life and best friend, James Riley Dougan. Soon after they met, Jim was drafted into the Army. Before he was deployed, they married and moved to Fort Hood, TX. Following Jim’s return from Korea, they moved back to Glady’s hometown of Homer for a short time before settling near Preble in 1976. There they raised their three children as a team, with great love, respect and confidence. Glady was an amazing, creative Mom and a kind, warm, beautiful soul. Jim and Glady were almost always found together and shared a long, fulfilling 49 years of love and devotion. Their respect for one another was unyielding, rare and a wonder to behold. Glady continued her love of creating things throughout her life by her gardening, canning, and sewing, but it was the family, the children, and the friends that she and Jim created together that she was most proud of.

Glady worked for 20+ years at Smith Corona in Cortland, including a year-long stint with the company out in San Diego, California when Smith Corona moved their operations to Mexico, upon returning home she joined the staff at Cortland Cable where she was an administrative assistant/technical writer until her retirement in 2011.

She is survived by her husband, Jim, and their three children, Jim and his wife Linda of Port Kent, NY; Molly Ferris and her husband Jim of Homer; and Marty and his wife Courtney of Gainesville, GA; nine grandchildren, Madeleine (Andrew) Rogers of Kings Bay, GA; Jocelyne Dougan and Brady Dougan of Menomonie, WI; Riley Ferris and Elani Ferris of Homer, NY;  Walker Dougan and Bailey Dougan of Gainesville, GA; and Larry and Andrew Pickreign of Saranac Lake, NY; one great-granddaughter Hailey Pickreign of Saranac Lake and one great-grandson “on the way” in Kings Bay, GA.

She is also survived by her three sisters, Becky Munson of Homer; Donna (Dan) Hill of Homer; and Jenny (James) Adam of Little York; and one brother, David (Jennifer) Munson of Lincolnville, ME; her sister-in-law, Jane (Bill) Lefort of Land-O-Lakes, FL; several nieces and nephews; aunt Lila Fiske of Brasher Falls, NY; and so many wonderful, dear and amazing neighbors and friends too numerous to name.

Gladys was predeceased by her parents and her in-laws, Robert and Elaine Dougan of Potsdam, NY.
